Overview
This is an overview of United Kingdom general election results since 1922. The 1922 election was the first election in the new United Kingdom of Great Britain. The Conservatives best result in terms of seats won since 1945 was at the 1983 General Election when 397 MPs were elected. The Commons Library has now made general election results from 1918 to 2017 available to view in one place.
This paper provides summary results for UK elections from 1918 to 2022 giving more extensive details about UK general elections. 1918 marked a major shift in the British electoral system introducing universal suffrage for men aged 21 and over and women aged 30 and over.
